Minnehaha County says its H1N1 vaccination clinic being held Thursday at the fairgrounds is invitation only. There had been some confusion about who could get the shot at Thursday's clinic.  Emergency officials say with only 2,000 doses available and 14,000 day care children in the county, the last thing they want to do is turn people away.

"Those day care facilities that have received the invitations, they are the targeted group. We would ask that everyone else would wait," Minnehaha County Emergency Manager Lynn DeYoung said.

DeYoung says in order to stop the spread of the flu, they have picked some of the largest day cares in the county to come to the clinic.

"If you have 400 little kids and one or two bring it in, we know that there's a potential to infect 400 other kids, and that's what we're trying to stop is one child infecting many, many more children," DeYoung said.

DeYoung says not only does their target population help stop the spread of the virus among children, it will also help take the burden off other parts of the community.

"Obviously, it has other cascading events on community services, more runs to the hospital or clinic, those types of things," DeYoung said.

And emergency officials believe an invitation only clinic is the best way to make the most out of the limited vaccines that are available.

"We feel by targeting the large day cares and then working down the list, we'll be able to hopefully get those populations vaccinated and prevent the eventual spread of the flu," DeYoung said.

DeYoung says that the county has given day care parents and providers paperwork to get into the clinic, and there are multiple layers parents and children have to pass through to get the H1N1 vaccine. So if you show up at the fairgrounds without that paperwork, you won't be getting the shot.
