They've always helped families make major life changes.  But some local realtors are going beyond buying and selling homes.

In less than a year, members of the Sioux Empire Realtors For Kids have raised enough funds to help donate money to a 13-year-old girl and her single mother, who traveled to Minnesota for a leg amputation surgery.  And they've given beds to 15 families in KELOLAND, who otherwise went without.

Now, the organization is hoping to keep the momentum going and help even more families and children in need.

With four children and another on the way, Stephanie Spader has a lot on her mind. But no matter how busy she gets, she always keeps an eye on her youngest.

Three- year-old Rebekah and her ten-year-old sister both have an extremely rare condition HSAN, or Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy.

"The biggest thing is that they don't feel pain, but they also don't regulate they're temperature properly.  They don't regulate their blood pressure,” Spader said.

That also means when either child gets sick, they get extremely sick. So the entire family is taking precautions.

“For instance, this winter, we're living our life in isolation.  We don't go to church, we don't go to the grocery store, we don't go out to eat,” Spader said.

When Realtors for Kids heard about the family's hurdles, they handed over a check and bought two hospital grade thermometers, which cost $375 each.

"It was just a way for us to put a hand out, and as real estate people who often put our hand out for something else, we were able to give something back,” Bill Zortman with Realtors For Kids said.

Spader says the gift is a relief and one less thing their family has to worry about. With her daughters' special needs, store bought thermometers just didn't cut it.

"They always give you a different reading and you never know what's accurate, so you're calling the doctor because they're sick and you want to know what's going on and they don't even know what their temperature is,” Spader said.

Realtors for Kids is holding its first annual silent auction fundraiser on Thursday, October 29 at 6 p.m.
