An agronomist says farmers who already have winter wheat planted should consider spraying for downy brome, a pesky weed that likes to make its home in fields growing the crop.
Hughes and Stanley county Extension educator Ruth Beck says downy brome that was growing in winter wheat may not have been affected by the cold snap earlier this month.
The current warmer weather offers a good chance to shut down the weed so it won't affect the wheat crop.
Beck says downy brome has the same life cycle as winter wheat, and farmers should rotate the use of their land because the weed is harder to kill in winter wheat fields.
