You've probably noticed pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness month, but one KELOLAND school district is going beyond the ribbons.  In Tea, it's "Pump Up The Pink Day,” a day to raise awareness and money to fight the disease. It's a cause that hits close to home for students and teachers.

From crowns to sunglasses and even feathers, the color pink is invading classrooms in Tea.

“Support breast cancer so I just wore all this pink,” Student Amber Ihlen said.

Over the course of the last few weeks staff has been asked to donate what they can. The money raised will go to Susan G. Komen For The Cure for breast cancer research. It was an idea that came from music teacher Leslie Fylling. She lost a sister to breast cancer and works with two other teachers who are now survivors of the disease.

Fylling says not only is the event about raising funds to help breast cancer research but it's also about raising awareness with many teachers in the school being female.

“If it makes somebody go in to get a mammogram or be more careful about checking themselves then we've done a good thing,” Fylling said.

Awareness is what saved teacher Nancy Waltner's life. She made sure to always make a yearly appointment for her mammogram and that's how they caught her breast cancer early.

“I mention that to the kids to make sure the females, but it can affect males too, but make sure the females in the family are getting a check up, that's how you can be a good son or daughter,” Waltner said.

As the pink is “Pumped Up” throughout the hallways, those involved know they are helping raise money and bringing awareness to finding a cure.

Last year the teachers in Tea raised $300 to go towards Susan G. Komen. Lennox also took part in "Pumping Up The Pink". With their help, the group is hoping to double it by the end of the month.
