Governor Mike Rounds says the money will be divided among 11 police departments, sheriff's offices and communications centers.
In a release, the governor says the money will allow hardware and software upgrades to meet enhanced 911 needs as they develop.
Enhanced 911 lets a public safety dispatcher get a caller's number, address or the location of the call, as well as the closest police, fire and emergency medical services that can respond. The caller's location will show up on a digital map, allowing first responders to pinpoint the location of an emergency call.
A state official says most of the emergency 911 calls come from wireless and Internet-connected telephones.
ENHANCE-911 funds will go to the:
- Bon Homme County Sheriff, $31,810
- Charles Mix County Sheriff, $31,810
- Cheyenne River 911 Corporation, $$31,810
- Fall River County Sheriff’s Office, $68,280 (Phase-Two)
