His rags to riches story captivated the nation, and tonight, we have an update. We were first to show you where 23-year-old Powerball Winner Neal Wanless spent his childhood, and now, we're getting a better idea of how he's spending his fortune.

In the rolling hills of Butte County, near the banks of the Belle Fourche River, South Dakota's 9th winningest Powerball victor is putting down roots. County records show Neal Wanless spent nearly $10-million on a massive ranch where he and his family are currently living in a modular home.

He refused to go on camera, but during an off-camera chat, Wanless' father Arlen told KELOLAND News that everything past the Bismark Bridge near Vale is now private property. They've already built a horsebarn and plans for a home are in the works.

The first lot of property was bought on July 15. Since then, the Wanless family has been as evasive with locals as they have with our cameras.

"We are kind of interested to see the new man who won the lottery come to Vale and we wish him well and we hope that he'll become part of the community," Vale resident Win Bauer said.

Win Bauer lives in Vale and has seen Wanless once; he said he was friendly but kept to himself, and sources tell us that's why he chose to build on this land.

"It's definitely at the end of the road and if you're looking for some space and not much traffic going by he found a good place for that," Bauer said.

A sentiment echoed by fellow neighbor Tanya Timm.

"I think that they come to the right community. We try to stay out of everybody else's business and that's what we're all about," Timm said.

Even if that business involves millions of dollars.
