Shortly after students got to school Friday in Tea, they were all put under lockdown. The School District took the precaution when someone reported seeing a person with a gun near one of the schools. While it turned out students weren't in danger, administrators and parents are pleased with how it went.
It was near the Tea Elementary School where several neighbors and a teacher saw what they believed to be a person carrying a gun down the street. Concerned, they called the Police Department.
At about 8:15 AM, as students filed into their first classes, the doors shut and locked behind them. The Tea Police Department ordered the lockdown so they could sweep through all three schools in town and look for anything suspicious.
“The kids go into classrooms, lock the doors, and the exterior entries are locked and we monitor the security,” Tea Superintendent Jerry Schutz said.
Dan Forsstrom didn't know about the incident until he got a text message from his sophomore daughter.
“Everything else that happens at these other schools and stuff people running around with guns, you never know so I came here to see what was going on,” Forsstrom said.
An hour and a half later, things were back to normal and doors were unlocked, but for those involved, it was a good test of the policies the school district has in place to keep students safe.
“What we did, just how we prevented them from getting in, that's very important. Actually, what I saw this morning just reinforces my comfort that we have security measures in place,” Schutz said.
The Tea School District also sent out mass emails, phone calls and text messages to all the parents to inform them what was happening and why they locked down the schools.
