Two brothers face charges after Hanson County authorities rescued 14 animals from a southeast South Dakota acreage.

Sheriff Mark Kessler used a taser to subdue Kenneth and Johnny Backes, who allegedly were interfering with the work of staff from the 2nd Chance Rescue Center.

Eight horses, three dogs and three rabbits were taken from the Backes acreage in Emery on Friday.

The brothers are charged with allowing a diseased animal to suffer needlessly, inhumane treatment of animals and obstructing a law enforcement officer. Kenneth Backes is also charged with resisting arrest.

The brothers were taken to jail in Mitchell.
