This past weekend, people in Britton, South Dakota saw quite a sight as an impressive cold air funnel was spotted in the area.

A funnel cloud of any type will get the attention of the neighborhood, especially when they look like this:

This viewer photo taken two miles north of Britton shows a cold air funnel taking shape, with a very long and narrow funnel extending toward the ground. No damage or ground confirmation was reported with this funnel.

Usually these funnels are associated with clouds that have high bases and are caused by the combination of cold air in the mid levels of the atmosphere and the "spin" associated with an upper level low pressure system.

While they are usually not cause for alarm, if you ever spot one of these nearby, it's still a good idea to find some shelter and wait for it to pass. But from a distance, they sure provide an interesting backdrop in the horizons of a late summer evening in KELOLAND.
