Governor Mike Rounds has awarded more than $1 million in grants to recreational trails across South Dakota.

The federal Recreational Trail Program provides up to 80 percent reimbursement for trail development and maintenance projects. The money comes from fuel taxes collected from the use of recreational vehicles off of highways.

Grants were given to the cities of Aberdeen, Armour, Belle Fouche, Mobridge, Montrose, Pierre, Rapid City, Sturgis and Wessington Springs. Grants also went to the Whitney Preserve-Cool Creek Nature Trail, the George S. Mickelson trail in the Black Hills and to Sica Hollow State Park.

Additional grants will help groom snowmobile trails.
