Activists with the political action group Greenpeace scaled the back of Mount Rushmore Wednesday, before unleashing a nearly 2,300 square foot banner on the monument. The group says it's part of a challenge issued to President Obama urging him and other world leaders to stop global warming.
The banner was taken down and several people were escorted from the park in chains, according to a witness who spoke with KELOLAND News.
According to the organization, the activists were highly trained in rock and industrial climbing. Greenpeace says they took special care not to damage the monument.
Law enforcement is still on the scene.
KELOLAND News has a crew at Mount Rushmore and we'll have more on the story tonight on KELOLAND News.
