The South Dakota Water Management Board is scheduled to decide July 9 whether to allow Big Sioux River water into Lake Poinsett in southern Hamlin County.
A state Department of Environment and Natural Resources engineer, Lynn Beck, says the lake is full and that its primary supplier, Lake Herman, is 3 feet above its ordinary full mark.
Supporters of having the option to allow the river water into the lake say the water was going down for more than five years before the recent wet spell. But others question why the river water, which carries higher levels of phosphorus, should be mixed with cleaner lake water.
