The high levels on Lake Oahe are drawing people to it. Add the fact that fish are biting and one small community is seeing a big benefit.
Pickups and trailers from all over are parked at the lake near Pollock. Brian Andersen came from the southern part of the state to fish there.
"Very good, very good,” Andersen said. “The weather wasn't that good this weekend; we had a little rain and it was cold but still caught fish so it was worth doing for sure."
This was Andersen's first time fishing at Pollock.
Peg Beyers works at the West Pollock Resort. She has seen significantly more boat traffic this year.
"Well, word of mouth because the river is up at least 20 feet higher than last year," Beyers said. "Plus, most everybody's catching their limit."
On a day when they would have expected 30 boat trailers parked last year, they're seeing closer to a hundred this year. Sometimes that number is higher.
The extra traffic has been a nice bonus for the city of Pollock as well.
"We're just looking to get back some of the traffic and the fishermen that we've known for the last few years that haven't been here in quite a while," Todd Moser said.
Moser owns a gas station and service shop in town. He's seen double the traffic in the past couple weeks. The trend in recent years has the number of travelers to Pollock decreasing. Moser is hoping to see the increased traffic continue.
If the plans of one first-time visitor hold true for others, he may.
"I'm definitely coming back, yeah, definitely," Andersen said.
Beyers says many visitors have been from South Dakota and surrounding states. But they've had people come from farther away too.
