Just as there's excitement in Winner and throughout the state about the Powerball jackpot, there's excitement in the lottery office as well.
Executive director Norm Lingle says a lot of people can benefit from this win. He found out someone hit the jackpot about 10:30 Wednesday night.
"Of course the first question since this doesn't happen with a lot of regularity is, ‘are you sure?’ Do we need to double check?’" Lingle said.
It turns out it is legitimate. And while the winner obviously has something to gain, so does South Dakota.
"It's great publicity for the state," Lingle said.
The chances of winning the jackpot are one in 195 million. With a smaller population, South Dakota sells fewer tickets than many of the other states. But Lingle says a win like this is a good reminder that doesn't matter.
"You can win this whether you're buying a ticket in Winner, South Dakota, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Buffalo, South Dakota. You always have an equal chance at winning," Lingle said.
The previous South Dakotans to win the Powerball jackpot were a husband and wife from Pierre. Their last name is Nguyen, which is pronounced the same as ‘win.’ This winning ticket was sold in Winner. Little things like that bring all that much more publicity to the win.
"Yeah that's created a buzz nationally,” Lingle said. “Even received several e-mails from my counterparts and of course 'Winner in Winner' is what they started off the e-mail message with."
That winner can take a lump sum of about $118 million or take the full amount in payments over thirty years.
If the person goes with the second option, his or her first payment would be an estimated $4 million. The final payment would be almost $13 million.
