It depends on how you count them, but we've added up at least four Powerball tickets that have been big winners in the state.  South Dakota's first multi-million dollar jackpot winner nearly two decades ago lived just 22 miles from where the current winning ticket was purchased.

Ionia Klein of Dallas, South Dakota was the first big lotto winner.  She worked as a convenience store clerk in the neighboring town of Gregory and claimed a $12.4 million ticket in Lotto America, before it became Powerball.

The ticket was left behind the counter after another clerk mistakenly punched it up for an unknown customer who refused to buy it. Klein initially said she had purchased the ticket before the drawing but later admitted claiming it the next day after realizing it had the winning numbers.

The store owners argued that the jackpot was theirs, and Klein eventually agreed to split the money. The owners got 58 percent and Klein was left with 42 percent.

Twelve years later, "The Watertown 34″ won $50.9 million in 2003, splitting a jackpot with a winner in Indiana. The South Dakotans all worked for Minnesota Rubber.

Then in 2005, a Lennox woman became a millionaire thanks to Powerball. Pat Fossum accidentally threw the ticket in the trash. Fortunately, she fished it out and collected $750,000 after taxes.

And in 2006, a Pierre couple struck it rich. Bill and Tina Nguyen of Pierre won the $117 million jackpot. They left the state, but not before donating thousands of dollars to local grade schools and the boys and girls club in Pierre.
