Harrisburg High School isn't part of the Governor's so called "one-to-one" laptop initiative, but the district will have new laptops for every two students next year.

Harrisburg junior Taylor Jones does a lot of her in-class work with paper and pencil, but next year she'll get to use a laptop for most classes without having to go to the computer lab.

"It gets kind of hectic because you know other people are using them for their projects, and it's tough to get in there if you're making a movie for another class," Jones said.

The district has worked out a deal with Apple, to lease 220 computers for three years with zero-percent interest. That takes care of all the staff and half the students, and the district says it's happy with the agreement.

The board has given the idea preliminary approval, but this is something high schoolers didn't think they'd get just a few months ago because of budget concerns.

"We obviously had been having conversations about Plan B if it wasn't going to be one-to-one, and we feel this will be a very good transition," High School Principal Kristine Alcon said.

As part of the deal with Apple, administrators will lease more computers in 2010 to cover every student, and then the district will own them once the lease is up.

"Technology is out there in the world, so we have to make sure we're preparing our students, and this is one more step in doing that," Alcon said.

Right now, the high school has PC's, but administrators will give many of them to the middle school once the high school makes the switch to Macs.
