A family is in shock and the FBI is investigating a shooting involving a tribal police officer north of Waubay.

It started with a disturbance call at Enemy Swim Tribal Housing and ended with a deadly shooting. The call came in Friday evening. When an officer arrived, they say 22-year-old Richard Bissonette was outside. He took off and the officer followed.

Authorities say he turned to the officer in a threatening manner and that's when the officer fired his gun.

It's near a church just north of his home where the pursuit for Bissonette ended and where his family's grief began.

"They let me in the emergency room and just to see him lying there, it was like a bad dream," Curtis Bissonette said.

That's true for the entire family. Curtis is one of Richard's brothers.

"The last call I got is that the cops were going to come get him and remove him from the house. And the next call I got 20 minutes later said he was shot," Curtis said.

Authorities aren't releasing all the details as they investigate but say when Bissonette turned to the officer, he had a weapon. They're waiting for autopsy results to confirm whether he had been drinking.

Regardless of the investigation's results, family members of the 22-year-old still can't believe what happened.

"Richard was so young and he wasn't a violent person. He was quiet and I think that's what really shocks everybody,” cousin Cheryl Owen said. “It was almost like a disbelief."

Other family members say the same as they grieve and wait for results of the investigation.

"We're just sticking together through this whole thing and, you know, that's all we can do right now," Curtis said.

Since the events happened in different jurisdictions, both Day County and on tribal land, the FBI is taking over the lead in the investigation.
