Rollover crashes can be deadly, but officials say most of those deaths could be prevented by one simple act. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is hoping to drive that point home by showing people what can happen when they're not buckled in.
You can lose control of a vehicle in an instant; and if you're not wearing your seatbelt, you're seven times more likely to die.
"If we could have everyone wear their seatbelt, we could respond to less fatalities. There would still be some injuries sustained but you're still going to be able to go home to your family," State Trooper Kevin Kinney said.
Trooper Kinney says 70 percent of all fatal crashes in the state are single-vehicle rollover accidents; that's 68 percent more than the national average. That's why this simulator is traveling the state to encourage all drivers to buckle up.
"When you see someone else get ejected out of the vehicle, even though it's not a real person, I think it makes it more real for each individual," Kinney said.
The simulator is suspended in the air, so it doesn't even begin to demonstrate how devastating a rollover crash can be when other surfaces and vehicles are involved or what happens at high speeds.
Sixteen-year-old Spencer Forbes says he usually buckles up, but admits many young drivers are irresponsible behind the wheel and would likely be traveling at a much higher speed than what's demonstrated.
"Of course, it'd be rolling a lot faster and as he gets tossed out of the vehicle, he'd probably fly a lot further, so I think yeah, it's pretty realistic and it'll be a reminder to some people," Forbes said.
A reminder that a simple click can save your life.
