Several Native American School districts in South Dakota are in line to receive stimulus funds. The Flandreau Indian School is in line to receive the largest amount, more than $20 million.  That's aid district officials say will help all the students they serve.

The 270 students, all grade nine through 12, at the Flandreau Indian School will soon have some new surroundings.  That's thanks to $23.4 million destined for the school from the federal stimulus bill. It's an allotment of money those at the school weren't expecting.

"No we didn't, because we have a pretty strenuous budget that we follow every year. So yes, it was a surprise," superintendent Betty Belkham said.

Students come to the Flandreau Indian School from 48 tribes, from 25 states. The money will mostly be used to update buildings, like the dorms. It'll also upgrade heating and cooling systems and make repairs that the aging buildings need.

"So I'm hoping that we can do a lot of things we need to do with our buildings and grounds and get some things done that need attention," said Belkham.

Exactly how the money is spent will be determined by the Federal Office of Facility and Management.  School officials will only relay to them what they feel is needed.

"It definitely will make a difference. Hopefully, there will be some things that will be much more convenient for students living in the dormitories and wherever," said Belkham.

And whatever the final plans are, those at the school know they're sure to help students on their road to success.
