South Dakota ranked among the top five states in more than a dozen crop, livestock and other agriculture-related categories in 2008.
The Department of Agriculture survey said South Dakota had the nation's largest population of bison at 387,000 head. Nebraska was second with 17,900.
The state ranked second in the number of lambs born and in production of alfalfa hay, flaxseed, sunflower seed and honey. Its oats, wheat and proso millet crops were third largest among the states.
South Dakota ranked 29th in the number of farms and ranches, but fifth in the amount of land devoted to farming and ranching.
