Some researchers say they worry that doubts might be cast on the independence and credibility of South Dakota State University's agricultural research now that the school's president is on the board of ag giant Monsanto.  And student leaders narrowly voted a resolution opposing David Chicione's seat on the board.

Student senator Shawn Mohr says he thinks the appointment will make SDSU's research seem tainted and that students were concerned they wouldn't be pursued as heavily by other companies.  Regents officials say it's common for presidents at major universities to become board members of private firms.  And Chicoine says his involvement with Monsanto will give him more expertise to use in his SDSU job.

He'll make $390,000 in salary and stock options in the next year as a Monsanto board member.
