The city of Sioux Falls has partnered with POET Ethanol Plant to create the "Landfill Gas Energy Project." Methane gas from the sanitary landfill is now being piped to the Chancellor Ethanol Plant as a new power source.
City and environmental officials gathered Friday to celebrate the project.
"The best thing about these projects is they make the city, they create jobs, create extra revenue for the city and they are one step ahead of a stable energy future," Environmental Protection Agency Swarupa Ganguli said.
The project will bring in nearly $2 million a year to the city. It's the first of its kind in the state and only one of three in the country.
