Minnehaha County Treasurer Pam Nelson spent Friday morning with county commissioners trying to come up with a plan to make the lines move more quickly. But in the end, the lines remain while frustration grows.
Hurry up and wait. That's what hundred of people are doing as they try to get new license plates or renew their tags. For most, the wait is two hours or longer.
Minnehaha County Resident Jake Mellema says, "Do it on your day off. Because if you're going to take it during your lunch hour or whatever there's no way you're going to get up there in time."
Jake Mellema found a comfy place to relax while waiting in line, but others aren't comfortable with the delays.
Treasurer Pam Nelson says, "I’ve never seen, in the history of South Dakota something that equals this mess. And I think it will be a long time before we see anything like it again. I can't imagine anything that can come out this bad."
Together with county commissioners, Treasurer Pam Nelson has been communicating frustrations with the system to the governor.
Commissioner Jeff Barth says, "There are still some issues with the slowness of the newer system we haven't been able to get rid of. But we're going to do everything we can to help our treasurer get stuff taken care of locally."
Nelson says, "My people are fed up. I'm fed up, and I'm tired of everyone around here thinking there is more that we can do."
To further complicate matters, two staff members of the treasurers office have quit since the new system was installed.
Nelson says, "Finding people that can just step in and do this work is just not, you can't go to Labor Ready to do that."
Which means the long lines will remain.
Barth says, "Don’t come down. If you can, mail it. That stamp is a lot less than the two hour wait.
But if you can't avoid it, go with a good attitude.
Mellema says, "Be patient and have fun with it. Don't get disgusted with it because you have no control over it. So there's nothing you can do about it."
Nelson says you are able to call the office for renewals, however, the staff is so overwhelmed, and they’re struggling to answer incoming calls.
