The Dow has closed below 10,000 for the first time in three months, as mounting debt in several European economies raised new questions about the health of the global financial system. The Dow ended the day down 104 at 9,908. The S&P 500 was off 9 and the Nasdaq was down 15.
  • Energy prices climbed Monday amid predictions that another winter storm will dump more snow on the East Coast.  Oil, heating oil and gasoline prices increased in response to the forecast. But the contract for natural gas, which remains in huge surpluses in the U.S., slid nearly 2 percent.
  • Japanese news reports say Toyota plans to recall about 300,000 Prius hybrids worldwide over a brake problem. The reports say the automaker is likely to notify both the U.S. and Japanese governments Tuesday, as a top executive testifies before Congress. Meanwhile, Kelley Blue Book says it's lowering the resale value of recalled Toyotas for the second time in less than a week, leaving them as much as 4 percent or $300 to $750 lower than a week ago.
  • A former U.S. Army computer-security specialist has found a way to break into a type of chip that protects the most important secrets inside many personal computers.  An attack could force heavily secured computers to spill documents that were presumed to be safe, including classified government reports and confidential business plans.
  • A federal judge has promised to decide by the end of next week whether to approve a $150 million settlement between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Bank of America.  The deal announced last week would settle civil charges alleging the bank misled shareholders when it acquired Merrill Lynch last year.
