Its not often in Minnesota High School Football that two teams from the same conference get to square off for a state title, but that's the scenario that will play out at the Metrodome later this week.
Little Sioux Conference rivals Adrian and Minneota will meet in the Class "A" title game Friday afternoon. It's a day the Dragons have been waiting for since suffering a 30-point loss to the Vikings in their season opener.
"After that we had a few players turn around and say 'we'd like to have another shot at Minneota,'" said Adrian head coach Randy Strand. "And we knew where we'd have to meet them would be in the state finals. It kind of gave us another goal and a path to head for, so I give our kids a lot of credit. They got it in their mind that this is a team we wanted to see again, and we've worked ourselves into that position."
Adrian has won 11 of its last 12 to earn the rematch. Strand stopped well short of guaranteeing victory, but says he's expecting a very different game.
We always say 'it's alright to get beat as long as we're learning from it and we can get better because of it,'" Strand said. "And we feel like we did. Defensively we've come a long ways. We've made an adjustment. We've moved some kids, some other kids have stepped it up. So Minneota, they're going to see a little different team than what they saw the first time, just personnel wise, and hopefully the level of play that we've brought it to now."
The Class "A" Championship is slated for 1:00 PM Friday at the Metrodome. Adrian is making its second appearance in three years. The Dragons will be playing for their first state title. Minneota will go for its fourth.
