You may feel a little uneasy going into this seasonal flu season because many of you are still waiting for the seasonal flu vaccine.
Well, now you're in luck. A large shipment has just arrived in KELOLAND.
Believe it or not, Sanford's last shipment of the seasonal flu vaccine came in a little earlier than expected. And now it's waiting for you at your local clinic.
It was delayed and then delayed again. The seasonal flu vaccine wasn't expected to show up until the end of the month.
“It changes. It's a fluid situation but we were pleased that it was early and not late,” Sue Nygaard with Sanford Pharmacy said.
Sanford Health's pharmacy ordered 48,000 doses of the seasonal flu vaccine, but up until now, they'd only received 60 percent of their order.
This week, they received the remaining 17,200 doses. And health officials don't expect leftovers this flu season.
“I think that this year the demand is higher and the awareness is certainly heightened because of the H1N1,” Nygaard said.
Along with Sanford Clinics across the region, Avera received just over 3,000 doses this week and expects another 5,000 next week.
And if you look at years past, it's definitely not too late to get the vaccine.
“This is our normal vaccination time. Normally, November is our peak vaccination time for the seasonal influenza so we don't normally peak in South Dakota until between February 1st and mid-March. So now is the perfect time to get vaccinated and all the way really into December, January, even February is a perfect time,” Nygaard said.
But if you've recently received the H1N1 vaccine, you may have to wait.
You can receive both the injectible seasonal and H1N1 vaccine at the same time. The same goes for getting the mist and shot together. But...
“You can not receive two of the mist at the same time. They must be separated by 28 days,” Nygaard said.
No mass seasonal vaccination clinics are planned, but scheduling an appointment with your physician will protect you from the virus.
Rapid City Regional is still waiting for 6,000 doses of the seasonal flu vaccine. They expect the shipment to arrive in the next couple of weeks.
