A South Dakota group Coalition for Cures Not Cloning is speaking out against embryonic stem cell research. Coalition for Cures Not Cloning is sharing their opinions on a controversial issue.

"South Dakotans don't want to go down that road because we want to stick with responsible science versus going in the direction of irresponsible science," Chris Hupke said.

The group is against embryonic stem cell research but still supports adult stem cell research. Hupke says that's because after 10 years of scientific research there isn't proof it works.

"Embryonic doesn't work, it hasn't worked, it won't work and clearly that's what these scientists are saying, it's a dead end alley," Hupke said.

But the group South Dakotans for Lifesaving Cures disagrees with Hupke.

The group supports both adult and embryonic stem cell research. Member Dave Volk says doctors he's talked with say research is moving in a positive direction, but more needs to be done.

"Ten years is a very short time for medical research," Volk said.

That's why the group is pushing to make it legal in South Dakota.

"They say that embryonic stem cell research holds wonderful promise for treating cancer, diabetes and Parkinson and a whole host of diseases.

Volk's group needs to get more than 16,000 signatures in order for the issue to go on the November 2010 ballot.

South Dakota is one of five states that does not allow embryonic stem cell research.
