Governor Mike Rounds says the health reform bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives would break South Dakota's state budget.

Rounds says the bill passed last weekend by the House would make everyone earning less than 150 percent of the federal poverty level eligible for Medicaid, the state and federal program that pays medical expenses for low-income people. He says that would add 52,300 South Dakotans to the Medicaid program.

The governor says the House bill would cost South Dakota $134 million for a five-year period from 2015 to 2019.

Rounds says he gave the financial estimates to South Dakota Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, who voted against the health reform measure.
