The Embrace Church of Sioux Falls opened the doors of its new home Sunday. The church relocated to the corner of 69th Street and Cliff Avenue. And Embrace's new home has given them a unique opportunity to embrace new followers.
The Embrace Church prides itself on appealing to young adults and young families. We told you about the church this summer when they encouraged parishioners to use the social networking site Twitter as part of their service. And now, as they start a new chapter in a new building, they're hoping to expand their appeal.
The pews have been replaced by black chairs. And the artwork on the wall is comtemporary, not biblical, a couple of big differences from the usual sanctuary.
"It's definitely not your typical church," said first-time church-goer Patrick Doyle of Harrisburg. "But it's very appealing to younger people, people my age. I fit right in. I felt I didn't have to put on a face or a smile."
And that's the atmosphere Reverend Adam Weber wants his parishioners to enjoy, a place where they can feel comfortable. And the turnout Sunday morning gave him some positive feedback.
"It's just amazing," Rev. Weber said. "We didn't really know what to expect or who would all come. Switching across sides of town and going to a morning service and place of our own, we just had no idea what to expect. And by far, we blew away anything we've ever had."
This summer, at Embrace's old home, Weber asked church-goers to use Twitter during the service to let him know what they were thinking. Weber says he's planning on using Twitter even more now that Embrace moved to its own building.
"It was a huge success when we had it the first time around of just people really sharing and having that communication back and forth during the service," Rev. Weber said. "And so, especially now that we have more of the abilities to do that because of technology, I'm excited for those kinds of things."
With week one in the books, Reverend Weber is excited for the future, with goals to spread the message using technology.
"Every twenty-something is on Facebook or on Twitter," Rev. Weber said. "And so, it's really just the church as a whole, kind of expressing themselves as they would. It fits the church exactly."
And based on the turnout, it fits the parishioners too.
Embrace Church holds two services each Sunday morning.
