Nearly every store, both big and small, hopes to cash-in on Black Friday by offering holiday shoppers incredible deals.
A Sioux Falls gun shop is using the most anticipated shopping day of the year for a different reason.
It is Black Friday at Gary's Gun Shop. Some customers are buying, others are just browsing, but everyone who walks into the shop Friday can walk out with a new title.
"We decided we needed to do something to protect our 2nd amendment rights," Jackie Naatjes with Gary's Gun Shop said.
For the next two days, Gary's Gun Shop is holding a membership drive for the National Rifle Association.
"It’s $25 to join. You get your choice of a hunting magazine, a knife and the opportunity to take part in something that will not take away your right to bear arms," Naatjes said.
A right many gun-owners feel is in jeopardy with a new president moving into the White House.
"I don't know, they go in there with good intentions but there’s a lot of political pressure pulling every-which way," Ed Johnson from Pipestone said.
Russ Limbke is an avid hunter and a new member of the NRA.
"I think it's very important because there's a lot of people that like to hunt and shoot recreationally and I would like to maintain the ability to keep doing that," Russ Limbke said.
Historically, gun sales surge when the economy is struggling; political uncertainty is also good for business.
"They've been fantastic actually, but that's the short-term, but we're worried about the long term, you need strength in numbers," Naatjes said.
Gun advocates say they need a strong voice in Washington, not only to protect a person's 2nd amendment rights but also help the gun shop's bottom line.
"Many businesses including ours at Gary's Gun Shop and throughout South Dakota, we are a big hunting capitol and we need to protect our business," Naatjes said.
Whether it's politics or economics, more people are buying guns and hoping to give the National Rifle Association a stronger voice on Capitol Hill.
There are currently 4.5 million members in the NRA. The membership drive continues thru Saturday at Gary's Gun Shop in Sioux Falls.
