The Hughes County Commission voted 3-2 against raising the county's wheel tax by $2 a wheel. It would have
raised $160,000 for road maintenance.

Dave Braun told commissioners he would lead an effort to refer it to a public vote if they approved it.

Braun led a referral of a similar wheel tax increase in 1995 that was rejected by 70 percent of the voters.
