Where were you five years ago tonight? If it was here in KELOLAND, you probably remember tornado Tuesday. That night 67 tornadoes hit South Dakota alone.

Storms come and go, but a few leave a lasting impression that we don't easily forget. A view from near Manchester, South Dakota, June 24th, 2003, was one of those weather moments that illustrated the power of a tornado.

Mark Gubbins, a local weather spotter for Iroquois, captured still photo graphs of the tornado shortly before and after its strike on the tiny South Dakota town. Few tornadoes last as long or travel as slowly as this one did.

"I remember standing behind the camera with this one shot of the Manchester tornado in the foreground for 12 minutes, an extremely rare event," Gubbins said.

But it wasn't just Manchester, of course.

Tornadoes were everywhere that night. From near Vermillion and Viborg, dozens of tornadoes were spotted that night; the most anyone has ever seen in this area in one night.

Extremely turbulent and unstable air was in place ahead of a strong low pressure system that was tracking across KELOLAND that night.

At one point, it was in the 90s in Yankton and in the 40s in Custer. What makes this tornado event even more memorable is that no one lost their life to a tornado that evening. The warnings worked and we are grateful knowing it could have been much worse.
