The rising waters are threatening several homes in Lincoln county. The hardest hit area right now is in Canton by Christmas Lake, where water is rising up to the back doors of homes.
The city of Canton has been asking for volunteers to fill sandbags all day to help stop water from getting into homes near Christmas Lake. And people who live nearby appreciate all the help.
Canton residents are hoping sand is the savior that will keep water out of their homes.
Canton resident Kim Schneider says, "It's been up, but not this high up, we've just had too much rain and it doesn't have anywhere to go."
Christmas Lake's new shore is in the backyard of these homes, while volunteers make sandbags in the street to try and stop the rising water.
Lincoln County Emergency Manager Harold Timmerman says, "Filling sandbags off a concrete truck and taking them down to barricade some houses from that lake."
Dozens of volunteers helped make sandbags to save homes.
Schneider says, "That's one thing about a small community. They just pull together and help. Every neighbor has been going from house to house. If their house is done they keep on going down the line and everyone's been pitching in and it's great to live in a small community when stuff like this takes place."
Lincoln County Emergency Management says the sandbags are doing the job for now, but if the area continues to get hit with several inches of rain overnight it could be a long night for volunteers and homeowners in Lincoln county.
Timmerman says, "If it rains heavy again we're gonna have an issue we maybe can't deal with you know anymore than we're doing now. But, we're trying to stay ahead of it a little bit at this point in time to try and prevent more damage than we've already got."
