How would you feel about a known-sex offender moving into your neighborhood? People in Luverne are worried after finding out a level three sex offender will soon be released into the community. Level three is considered most likely to re-offend.
But before anything happens, a public meeting will be held to let everyone know what's going on.
Sharon Smidstra was supposed to be helping troubled teens at a halfway house in Magnolia, Minnesota. Instead, she was convicted in 1999 for having sex with five teen boys and giving them marijuana and cigarettes.
In ten days, she'll be released and has registered to live in the 100 block of east Luverne Street. Neighbors say they're glad at least Minnesota law allows them to know what's going on.
Luverne resident Tim Walgrave says, "I think it's great, because I have four young kids, I want to know if someone lives in the area, I think it's our right to know."
Walgrave says he thinks the fact that the sex offender is a woman is unusual, but he still thinks there's a risk to his kids.
Luverne resident Tim Walgrave says, "sex offenders to me, are somewhat incurable and given a chance, they're going to do it again, in my opinion."
While Smidstra is considered at risk to strike again, Minnesota law allows her to live anywhere she wants as long as she registers with law enforcement and the public is notified.
The public notification meeting will be held at 7:00 PM in the Little Theater at the Luverne High School next Thursday, September 14th. A representative from the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the Rock County Sheriff and an Assistant County Attorney will be on hand to give a presentation and answer questions.
