SIOUX FALLS, SD - Recent heavy rain has some people wondering whether changes need to be made near Augustana College.

Drivers were dealing with a lot of water last week at 33rd Street and Grange Avenue.

Director of Campus Safety Rick Tupper says it wasn't the first time this stretch of road filled with water.

"You know I think the way its designed, there's a low spot on Grange Avenue and I don't know if it can be corrected without a lot of major construction," Rick Tupper said.

Because of that, when the Augustana Campus Safety hears heavy rain is on the way, the department takes action.

"It floods so quickly, within ten minutes, it was impassable, so we really watch as closely as we can and we have cameras down there too, so we can monitor from our dispatch center," Tupper said.

When water starts to rise, Campus Safety blocks off any dangerous areas and notifies police.
And the problems often stretch beyond the streets.

"As far as how it impacts the campus in that area when you look at the church right there that basement floods when that happens as well its called Heritage Parks, Heritage Park floods and our grounds office is there and we do have one theme house that also is impacted," Rick Tupper said.

With no permanent solution in the works, Campus Safety plans to stay on top of the situation to keep problems to a minimum, no matter how much rain the city gets.
