We've heard a lot about layoffs this week in Sioux Falls.  Three local employers each cut dozens of jobs. With more businesses letting people go, some people are returning to school.

One KELOLAND student says she's back in school for herself and her family

Rhianna Hofflander's been taking classes at Kilian Community College for about a year. In her downtime, she helps at the front desk. When she's home, she's with her two kids, her fiancé and getting ready for a new baby. So, why juggle all of this for a degree?

"So, I have more at my fingertips, and will be able to hopefully spend more time with my kids, and I don't have to be taking whatever odd job here and there,” Hofflander said.

Hofflander wants to be a kindergarten teacher. She used to work at a daycare.

"They weren't laying off at the job I was at, but there was some problems that they were having, and It came to a point where there was a decision I had to make,” Hofflander said.

And that decision was to come to Kilian Community College. President Mark Millage says a lot of students at the Sioux Falls campus want to ensure positive change in their lives.

"What's the best investment you can make right now, is an investment in yourself, and so you can make that personal investment in education,” Mark Millage said.

Millage says it’s important to decide what you want out of your career, and if there are barriers, returning to school could open more doors.

"With the economy the way it is, with people being laid off, it's an opportunity to do a reassessment,” Mark Millage said.

"It was the best decision I had ever made, and I've been so happy this year,” Hofflander said.

Millage says historically, enrollments increase during times of economic instability. The next semester starts December first.
