Stock prices are rising strongly. The Dow has been up 150 points, topping 10,400.

  • Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says the nation's central bank will keep a close eye on the sliding U.S. dollar. Speaking to the Economic Club of New York, he pledged anew to keep interest rates at record lows to nurture the economic recovery.
  • General Motors reports losing $1.2 billion since getting out from under bankruptcy protection. That's a far better showing than seen in previous quarters. It also plans to begin repaying some of the $6.7 in government loans in December.
  • A new coalition has been launched to urge the U.S. government to make a major investment in electric
transportation, saying that electric cars are the best way to confront the nation's dependence on imported oil. The group wants to lay groundwork for millions of electric cars to reach U.S. highways.
  • A 55-foot yacht named "Bull" and two smaller boats that used to belong to imprisoned financier Bernard Madoff are headed for the auction block. Some 29 people have put up a $100,000 deposit for the opportunity to bid and the U.S. Marshals Service expects more to register.
