For the second time in as many years, Deadwood could be losing its only grocery store. Blondie's IGA opened its doors in November of 2007, after the store closed under a different name four months earlier. Seeing it shut down again would be devastating to those who shop there.
As a caregiver for her young nephew, Diann Lauer goes through groceries quickly, and she relies on Blondie's IGA in Deadwood to keep her shelves stocked.
"Pretty much every week. Probably twice a week," Lauer said.
The threat of the store closing up shop for the second time in two years is upsetting to this frequent customer.
"I just want to have a grocery store here in town, period. I don't want to go to Lead or Spearfish or Rapid City or anyplace else. This is my grocery store," Lauer said.
Officials say that's precisely what's driving them out of business. Manager Mark Richardsen declined an on-camera interview, but says more customers are going to places like Wal Mart for their groceries.
"There's people here that need this store, there's no doubt about that," customer Roger Johnson said.
Johnson has lived in the area for twenty years and has seen the store change hands at least three times. Each closure has meant a hardship to shoppers.
"Well, it's going to be hard on the older citizens. People who come in here with motorized chairs, this is the only place they can get to. Yeah, it's going to hurt some people," Johnson said.
Richardsen says they should know the fate of the grocery store by the end of the week.
