Stock prices have risen since the opening bell.  With the advance, the Dow is getting closer to moving back above the 10,000 level.
  • Elinor Ostrom of Indiana University has become the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in economics. She's honored with Berkley's Oliver Williamson for work regarding the relationship between people, companies and economic systems.
  • Postseason play for the Chicago Cubs is a trip to bankruptcy court. The step, which was expected, is intended to allow Tribune Company to sell the baseball team.
  • Shares of KB Home have dropped after the company said the Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating it for possible accounting and disclosure violations. The Los Angeles-based homebuilding company says it is cooperating with the investigation.
  • Analysts say cold weather over parts of nation are credited for giving energy prices a lift. Benchmark crude for November delivery gained $1.58 to $73.35 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
