Claremont hasn't had a post office in months. Services were suspended in December when the building didn't meet postal service standards.  Now residents are coming together, trying to get it to re-open.

Claremont isn't a growing town. And people don't want to see it shrink any faster than it already is.

"We don't really want to give people, community people, another chance to leave our community and do business elsewhere," Carla Sanderson said.

As a business owner, Sanderson fears that will happen if the post office doesn't come back. People won't come to Claremont's main street for mail and won't come for other things either.

Doris Spencer doesn't own a business but fears the same.

"I hope we get the post office back," Spencer said.

A committee has formed to reach that goal. One member bought the former post office building and is willing to fix it up if that'll bring the post office back to town.

The city is also willing to make space available for the post office at the city hall building. Bottom line, they just want it back.

"It's very important to us as a bank because of the security part of it," bank employee Jean Rasmussen said.

Right now, mail service is run through the Langford post office. A carrier picks up and delivers mail once a day to mailboxes in Claremont.

The banker has already expressed in a letter his concerns with security and convenience when a bank is in town but a post office isn't.

"If it's priority or if we need it registered, we want it that day to go out. Well, if we don't have it done before 10:30 in the morning, we can't get it done," Rasmussen said.

It's been more than four months without a post office in town. People in Claremont don't want to see another go by.

The USPS has not decided what the future of the Claremont post office will be. And there's no word on when there will be a decision.
