It's a protest of historic proportions and meant to send a strong message to the President, Senators and Representatives. Organizers hope Tea Parties on Tax Day will raise awareness about excessive government spending.
Three South Dakota cities are holding a Tea Party Wednesday: Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Spearfish. The national movement's purpose is to protest government control and spending. The one held in Sioux Falls will feature a modern day Boston Tea Party.
They dumped tea into the Boston Harbor in 1773 to protest new taxes. Wednesday's tea parties will do the same as taxpayers take action against increasing taxes and government spending.
"We need tax relief. We don't want higher taxes, we cannot punish the people who create 98 percent of the jobs,” Allen Unruh said.
Allen Unruh expects hundreds to show up to Covell Lake in Sioux Falls to take part in the Boston tea party re-enactment.
Complete with a ship, crates thrown into the lake will represent the money American workers are handing back to the government tax day. Unruh's already heard from people of all affiliations and backgrounds.
"We've got a big banner for everybody to sign, that’s gonna be there, which we'll take to Washington, D.C.,” Unruh said.
He hopes the government hears their message loud and clear and says this protest is just the beginning.
"If they ignore us this time, they’re gonna see a revolution by next year, I feel,” Unruh said.
If you're interested in taking part or just checking things out, the Sioux Falls event runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Covell Lake in Terrace Park. In Rapid City, it's being held at Memorial Park from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. And in the tea party in Spearfish will be held in front of the U.S. post office, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
