Most people probably remember him from his late night comic skits on Saturday Night Live as Stewart Smalley, but Al Franken is serious about becoming the next US Senator of Minnesota.

Franken, who just recently picked up the DFL nomination, made a campaign stop in Luverne today where he he got a dose of daily affirmations from his supporters.

We're a great country, but we're not a great country unless we're a good country.

Inside the Coffee Haus on mainstreet Luverne, Al Franken brewed up a few jokes and conversation.
But what Franken really came for was to listen.

"Four dollar gas, I'm hearing healthcare, well that's has been for the last two years I've been hearing that and their kids' education not enough investment for that," said Franken.

Aside from running for student body president in the 7th and 8th grade, this is Franken's first run for public office. But stresses this is no joke.

"No, it's nothing like that. I'm running for senate because I don't like the direction the country has been going, I don't think Norm Coleman has been working on behalf of the state of Minnesota and there's five million Minnesotans who need a voice in Washington and they haven't had one with this senator," said Franken.

A state where voters once elected a pro-wrestler as their governor, also wouldn't be afraid to elect a comic writer as their senator.

"I like that he's honest and talks to people and listens and really spend time with people," said Cheryl Avenel-Navara.

"I think I'm going to talk to him about social security, younger people are really worried about that and I think he'll do a lot to help," said 19 year old Chris Dorhout.

Franken spent 15 years on Saturday Night Live, but now he's hoping he's smart enough, good enough and people like him enough to vote for him.

Franken moved back to Minnesota in 2006. He grew up in St. Louis Park and lived a couple of years in Albert Lee.
