With a possible case of H1N1 in Marshall County, the health department has been in contact with the Britton-Hecla School District. The superintendent of the district talked with health department officials multiple times Friday. He's not panicking but isn't just waiting to see what happens either.
Inside the school, whether it's in band or any other class, there are many times students come in contact with each other. So school officials aren't taking the possible threat of a virus lightly.
"Because there is concern,” superintendent Don Kirkegaard said. “Obviously the parents are worried, concerned about the welfare of their children. We are as well, as well as the whole community."
Kirkegaard says right now, the school is following the South Dakota Department of Health’s advice and taking necessary precautions, including asking sick students to stay home and those who are in class to practice good hygiene. The school is also sending a letter home with information about H1N1.
If the circumstances in or around the school change and a more urgent situation comes up, Kirkegaard says the school will do what it has to do.
"We would certainly look to the state for advice but we will do everything necessary to make sure that we keep the safety of our kids at the forefront," Kirkegaard said.
As school goes on as normal whether in band or any other class, Kirkegaard says he will keep in contact with the health department. And officials from the department have assured him they'll pass on necessary updates as well.
There isn't any talk of having to close the school. But if the situation changes, the superintendent will be in contact with the health department to figure out a course of action.
