Kids are told all the time not to drink and drive, but the message doesn't hit home until they've seen the consequences, just like Pipestone, Minnesota students did Tuesday.

It may not be a real car on a real street, but this drunk driving simulator still delivered a real message in a way these Pipestone high schoolers have never seen before.

"With all the electronics and stuff, I think it will have more impact than if they just sat up there and said, 'Don't drink and drive,’" said senior Blaine Jasper.

The national Save A Life tour used the simulator and graphic videos to show what happens during a drunk driving accident, and how the victim could end up.

"It kind of hits it at home. It's one of those things where you don't really know until it happens to you," said Megan VanderPoel, also a senior.

"It's very graphic, but I think that's necessary to get the right effect on the kids," Jasper said.

In conjunction with the tour, the Minnesota State Patrol set up this rollover simulator, and emergency responders had a gurney with this accident victim dummy on display.

"It gives everybody a real taste of what could happen to us," VanderPoel said.

Sobering reminders, as students head into prom and graduation season.

Experts say spring is the time when most drunk driving accidents occur among teens, but statistics show the number of deaths has dropped by 60 percent over the last three years.
