Authorities have lifted an evacuation order for residents on the east side of Big Stone City after a collision left a semi on its side leaking anhydrous ammonia.
The accident happened on Highway 12 in Big Stone City near the Minnesota border shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The two-vehicle accident involved two people but they both came away with only minor injuries. All things considered, Grant County Sheriff Mike McKernan is thankful things weren't worse.
He says a semi was carrying anhydrous ammonia from Canby, Minnesota, to Wilmot and just crossing the border into South Dakota. A Clinton, Minnesota, man veered over the center line in a van as he was meeting the truck.
The two collided and the semi tipped on its side. Fire fighters found a small anhydrous leak.
"Anhydrous ammonia is attracted to moisture so it gets your eye balls, your nostrils, you mouth, everything,” McKernan said. “And if you're directly in the cloud of it you'll have some very serious health problems.”
Authorities immediately began evacuating the eastern side of Big Stone City, about 75 people in 25 homes.
Emergency crews from both Minnesota and South Dakota worked together to secure the scene, re-route traffic and monitor the leak.
"Big Stone City and Ortonville, Minnesota with their close proximity, they work together a lot and same with my county and my sheriff's office working with the neighboring sheriff's office and law enforcement. So we're all pretty much used to working together so that helps a lot," McKernan said.
An ambulance brought both men to the Ortonville Hospital but they were both released.
