The reward money is multiplying but the mystery remains.  Despite a lot of unknowns, authorities and family members are hopeful that someone has information that will lead them to the driver who hit a 50-year-old Britton man and left him lying unconscious in the street.

David Christenson should be at his family's farm driving truck for harvest. But having one less person around to help is the least of his family's worries as Christenson recovers slowly in a Fargo hospital.

"I could not believe what I was hearing. That someone would run into your son and just leave him lying in the street to die," Dorothy Christenson said.

That was Dorothy’s reaction when she learned what had happened to her son. She and her husband, Rollin, still can't believe it.

Their son, David, had been at a pageant in Britton watching his daughter give up her crown. He had supper with friends and headed home. The next thing they know, he was in the emergency room and headed for Fargo by air.

"He has a fractured skull, his top two vertebrate are fractured but in place, broken clavicle," Rollin said.

And that's not the end of his injuries. But it's not the accident that upsets the Christensons the most.

"If you hit a deer, you'd probably get out of your car to see how badly the deer is hurt. You can't just do this to a person. It is just inhumane," Dorothy said.

On Monday, investigators didn't have many answers, and the same was true half way through the week.

But they do have a text message Christenson sent around 10:00 Saturday night saying he was going home. They didn't receive a report that someone had found him until almost 10:30. He was just a couple blocks from the restaurant.

In the hospital Sunday, David didn't even acknowledge the Vikings were playing, something his dad says is unheard of. But he did eventually squeeze his dad’s hand.

"That was really touching to have him squeeze my hand and just about brings somebody to tears," Rollin said.

But so do all the unanswered questions facing his family as they wait.

"He does better than what they expect in some ways so there's always hope," Rollin said.

Dorothy Christenson received a call from Fargo saying that for the first time since the accident, David was able to get out the words 'I love you' to his wife. But he still has a long recovery ahead.

The family is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the driver. Wednesday, a friend announced he'd double it.
