One man is dead and a female passenger is in the hospital after a car crash in Pennington County. It happened just before 4 a.m. Monday on North Haines Avenue, about a mile outside of Rapid City.
South Dakota's Highway Patrol says the driver of what's believed to be a Chevy Malibu lost control of the car, crossed the lane and crashed into a tree. He was thrown from the car, and authorities pronounced him dead at the scene. The man was not wearing a seatbelt.
A female passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Highway Patrol says speed and alcohol were likely factors in the crash.
