More than two dozen service men and women from South Dakota have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our liberty and freedom.  And in their honor and memory, their pictures and stories are being shared around the state.

On each of the banners, is a picture, a hometown, a story.

“Even though it is somber, it's still a matter of reflection and hopefully people will walk away with that realization and also be inspired because this is a community effort,” First Lieutenant, Eliann Carr, said.

There are 26 banners in the display, each representing a military member that died in the line of duty.

The South Dakota Fallen Heroes traveling exhibit is open to anyone willing to pay tribute to their ultimate sacrifice.

"It's shocking, it comes across, so many people who especially are veterans, have worn the uniform, they remember and they have lost friends as well,” Carr said.

Each soldier died while serving in either Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Bob Pirelli came all the way from Boston for the exhibit. His son served with Staff Sergeant Robb Rolfing in Iraq where in 2007 both men died in the service of their country.

"I spent a lot of time in a cemetery, back in Boston, it doesn't get easier, it's just like it was yesterday for me,” Bob Pirelli said.

Pirelli says memorials like this help with the healing process.

"To see what's happening now with the general public and the country itself, it's great to see that, these boys were proud,” Pirelli said.

The exhibit will be on display Saturday from 8am to 5 at the Convention Center. The banners are here in conjunction with a special dedication tomorrow. The Veterans Memorial Park will be receiving a sculpture in honor of the servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for our country.

The sculpture titled “Going Home” will be dedicated at Veterans’ Memorial Park on Saturday, November 7.  The ceremony will begin at 1pm. Covered Seating for the first 240 people will be provided. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

The traveling South Dakota Fallen Heroes banners will be on display free to the public at the Sioux Falls Convention Center Exhibit Hall 1 on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
