In Vermillion, children and pregnant women from around the region are getting their H1N1 vaccine and seasonal flu shots.

Despite the rain, more than 100 people waited outside Vermillion High School to be among the first to get vaccinated. It's an open house for the first tier. That includes children six months to four years old and pregnant women. They are offering both the seasonal flu and the H1N1 vaccine.

They started with nearly 1,500 doses to dole out. Those who stood in line, say they'd do it again.

While the line wasn't long at 10:30 in the morning, Betty LaCroix and her two-year-old granddaughter, Paisley, wanted to make sure they weren't going to miss out on the vaccine.

“I think it's extremely important. I have a son-in-law that's in a hospital in Kansas City and I'm so scared for all the little kids,” LaCroix said.

When they didn't have any luck getting the vaccine in Yankton, LaCroix decided to make the drive. Brooke Williams is expecting and she has a three-year-old daughter. They waited for three hours in hopes of protecting themselves.

“It's really nerve-wrecking to be pregnant and have a young one, you know?  We're both in such a high-risk category,” Williams said.

Since the vaccine was only available to people in the first tier Thursday, many waiting in line say they'll be back when it's available for everyone.

“I don't like to take chances and no chances with grandkids so if I have to do it one by one, I'll do it,” LaCroix said.
