Mayors of some South Dakota towns that have lost driver's exam stations are urging Governor Mike Rounds to reconsider the decision.

The 15 driver's licensing stations were closed as part of a plan to reallocate staff to busier stations in cities such as Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

Towns that lost their stations this week are Beresford, Britton, Canton, Clark, Clear Lake, Deadwood, De Smet, Flandreau, Freeman, Howard, Parkston, Philip, Platte, Salem and Tyndall.

Beresford Mayor Jim Fedderson says people are upset. He sent a letter to Rounds, and also urged residents to start a letter-writing campaign.

Salem Mayor Ken Scott says he also plans to send a letter urging state officials to reconsider the decision that he says is hard on small towns.

Cindy Gerber, director of South Dakota's driver's licensing program, says the state continually reviews business volume and staffing levels.
